About Field History Tracking

There are two (2) types of field history tracking:

  • Track Old and New Values

  • Track Changes Only

Tracking

Description

Track Old and New Values

The track old and new values type will track the old value as well as the new value when the field is modified.

EXAMPLE: The record will show you the field that was changed, the date it was modified, who the user was, and the old and new values of the field.

Track Changes Only

The track changes only type will track changes when the designated field is modified. A change log tracks what was change and who made the change, but the original value of the field is NOT captured.

Setup Field History Tracking

NOTE

For this guide, we are adding field history tracking for the Opportunity object. However, you can add this feature to other objects in Salesforce.

  1. Go to a record of the object you wish to setup field history tracking for.

  2. On the record page, click the gear icon and select Edit Object.

  3. On the configuration page, click Fields & Relationships.

  4. Click the Set History Tracking button.
The Object Field History page will display.

  5. On the Object Field History page, scroll to the section of the page with the desired type of tracking.

  6. Click the checkboxes for the fields for which you want to capture history.
You can select up to 20 fields

  7. Click Save.

This page allows you to select the fields you want to track on the Growth Opportunity History related list. Whenever a user modifies any of the fields selected below, the old and new field values are added to the History related list as well as the date, time, nature of the change, and user making the change. Note that multi-select picklist and large text field values are tracked as edited; their old and new field values are not recorded.

Access Field History

This data is stored against the individual record in the History object. Each object has its own History object, so for Growth Opportunities the object name would be Growth Opportunity History, this related list will appear with the other related lists on the object.

You are also able to generate reports using this data to perform analysis of the history across multiple records.
