Limitations | This guide will not go in-depth on the various types of fields that can be created. Please see Salesforce documentation for additional information. |
Purpose | This guide is designed to show an Administrator user how to create a field on the Growth Opportunity Object inside of their TechnoMile Growth Suite, and then have that field be displayed on the page layout. |
Validation | An end user should be able to see and interact with the field the Administrator created. |
Dependencies | N/A |
Step 1: Add Field to Opportunity Object
When you create a custom field, you configure where you want it to appear and optionally control security at the field level. For additional information on creating a field within Salesforce, learn more in the Salesforce Trailhead.
User Permissions Needed | |
|---|---|
To create or change custom fields: | Customize Application |
To add field-level security to profiles or permission sets: | Manage Profiles and Permission Sets |
It is best practice to search the object for a field similar to the one you are looking to create. There are many fields that are on the object that are not on the default page layout, and the field you are looking for might already exist.
NOTE
When you’re close to the limit of 500 custom fields and you delete or create fields, field creation can fail. The physical delete process reclaims and cleans fields, making them count temporarily toward the limit. The delete process runs only when the queue is full, so it can take days or weeks to start. In the meantime, the deleted fields are still counted as part of the limit. To request immediate deletion of fields, contact Salesforce Support.
Add Field to Growth Opportunity Record
Before you begin, determine the type of field you want to create.
Go to Setup.
Go to Object manager and select Growth Opportunity.
From the left side, select Fields and Relationships.
Click create new field.
Select the field type.
NOTE: Do not mark a field as required during this process. We highly recommend marking fields as required on the page layout rather than at the system level. This will affect any integrations you might have including task order ingestion.Select which profiles and page layouts this field will be added to.
Click Save.

Step 2: Modify Page Layout
When adding a field to the Growth Opportunity record, there are additional steps you must take to have it appear on the page layout. After you have created the field in setup, follow these steps to add it to the appropriate place.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT click the Import or Export buttons on this screen. If you do, you will be forced to rebuild the pages scratch.
From the App Launcher, search for Customize Growth Opp Layout.
From the Customize page, select the correct page layout based on record type that you want to modify.
From the correct page layout, navigate to the tab/section where you want to add the field.

Click the Add Field button. Begin typing in the field label of the field you just created in Step 1.
Click on the field label, then click into the next box and the Field API Name and View Field API will automatically be filled out.
Use the remaining options to finish adding your field:
NOTE
Don't use the classic lookup, this is a legacy functionality.
The Is Required option will mark the field as required when the user is creating/editing the record.
The Read Only option will make the field a read only field on the page layout and not allow users to modify it.

OPTIONAL: Rearrange fields.
Once you have added the field to the appropriate section, you can rearrange the fields in that section.Click Re-Arrange Field button at the top of the section.

In the Rearrange Fields screen, you can drag and drop the fields to arrange the field in the desired order.
The fields are moved in a Z pattern.
EXAMPLE: In this screenshot, if you placed a field above Growth Opportunity Name, then Growth Opportunity Name would move to the right, Stage would move down and to the left.
When you have the desired field arrangement, click the Rearrange button.
On the Customize page, click Save or Quick Save at the top of the screen.
